Housing Hotline in 2025

This year I had the honor of helping out in the Housing Hotline office at 40 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd. while Barbara Winters was on medical leave. She trusted me to act as her liaison, and I spent nearly four months there with her sister Cheryl.

The learning curve was huge.

I got to know many of the people who rely on the Warming/Cooling Center. I was struck by how diverse their situations are. Some live full-time in shelters or are unhoused; the Center is their community—watching movies, playing games, doing puzzles, and looking out for one another. It’s an essential space for the unsheltered.

I also met many low-income workers living in temporary housing or motels with support from the Housing Hotline. Some can pay a portion of the cost and the Housing Hotline covers the rest—an incredibly important service.

There was real fear during the government shutdown and the loss of SNAP benefits. For low-wage earners and families supporting others, losing a month of SNAP can mean falling behind on rent, utilities, transportation, and more. The balance is so fragile.

All of these experiences, combined with major funding cuts still to come, make this year’s raffle more important than ever.

I'm hoping this is our best year yet so I have 4 paintings to give away...4 WINNERS!

Housing Hotline Mission

Newport Housing Hotline’s mission is to help individuals and families in need gain stability and self-sufficiency, ensuring they have fair, safe, and affordable housing.

The Hotline supports anyone facing housing instability, with most of its work focused on providing emergency shelter during extreme weather. As a walk-in service with a modest budget, 89% of funds go directly to temporary housing.

The organization also maintains an updated website and participates in the statewide HMIS database, which helps enroll clients in permanent housing programs and connect them with services such as veterans’ support, family assistance, mental and physical health programs, and resources for domestic violence survivors.

The Community Housing Resource Board (CHRB): Housing Hotline is a 501 (c)(3) agency that acts as a resource and referral service for low-moderate income individuals and families of Newport County and the entire state of Rhode Island. The Housing Hotline is the first of its kind in the country. It assists those experiencing housing difficulties, such as discrimination and homelessness, locating housing opportunities for displaced persons, and helping with tenant-landlord disputes.
